Valheim Board Game Announced, Coming to Gamefound in September 2024
Coffee Stain Publishing, MOOD Publishing and Iron Gate Studio] are excited to announce that their hit viking survival game Valheim will be released as a board game adaptation. Designed and produced by MOOD Publishing, and developed by Ole Steiness, the award-winning designer behind the board game adaptation of the dwarven co-op game Deep Rock Galactic. Recently revealed at the Gamefound Feast, the funding campaign will be launching later this year.
The Valheim board game will be designed for 1-4 players that will take on the roles of mighty viking heroes, working together to prove their worth to the Allfather as they adventure through Valheim. The realm is hostile and unforgiving, forcing players to band together to survive as they explore the landscape, face environmental hazards and monsters, and topple bosses in order to succeed.

The Valheim board game will come with four initial biome types taken directly from the game: the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamps and Mountains. Players will then have to choose a character and start in a simple house with no resources to your name. Upon exploring the land and gathering initial materials, they will then be able to craft basic weapons to fend off any attackers, and venture even further out to improve their tools, reinforce their base and slay mythical beasts as the game evolves.
To further enhance the Viking fantasy, MOOD Publishing will be developing an array of figurines and artwork to support immersion, including a viking longhouse that will represent players’ settlements. Boss fights will be a ferocious challenge, too - players will have to activate forsaken altars to challenge specific bosses, upon which they will be thrust into a boss-specific arena to test their mettle against some of Valheim’s darkest horrors.
“I’ve got hundreds of hours in Valheim, so designing this game is a dream come true for me,” says Ole Steiness, lead designer of the Valheim Board Game. “Our goal is to make sure the tabletop experience properly reflects that incredible experience of exploring the tenth realm which took the world by storm. So far it has been coming together even better than we had hoped, building a game that’s fun, engaging and immensely replayable.”
“We definitely didn’t have ‘valheim board game’ on our bingo card when we set out to develop the game, but it is incredibly exciting for us,” said Henrik Törnqvist, co-founder of Iron Gate. “The prototype has captured the essence of Valheim better than we could have ever expected. We couldn’t be happier to work with Ole and MOOD Publishing on this as well, as their team has an amazing track record of staying true to the source and creating games that you can keep playing with your friends.”
