ShantyTown Launches Today on Steam, Inviting Players to Build Unique, Living Dioramas in Unexpected Spaces

Following a strong showcase at Steam Next Fest and a featured appearance at PAX East earlier this year, publisher Kinephantom and solo developer Erik Rempen of Silk Softworks proudly launches ShantyTown on Steam today accompanied by a fully adaptive soundtrack from vaporwave artist Macroblank.

A relaxing diorama-builder centred on fitting life into small spaces, ShantyTown invites players to construct dense, improvised neighbourhoods where every object, corner, and rooftop contributes to a world that slowly comes alive.

ShantyTown’s gameplay is not guided by rigid systems or optimisation loops. Instead, the game encourages intuitive placement by stacking buildings and discovering natural compositions through play.

Each diorama evolves organically, showcasing the subtle details within each map: textured graffiti, flickering street lights, huge birds drifting overhead, and several other interactions that players will encounter.
ShantyTown is a game driven by the player’s unique aesthetic choices, giving each playthrough and space its own sense of individuality.

A Calm, Responsive Experience

Accompanying this process is a fully adaptive soundtrack by Macroblank, designed to shift alongside player progress. Rather than remaining static, the music dynamically builds, creating a responsive atmosphere that keeps players engaged.

From Experiment to Full Release
[p3|c]

ShantyTown began as a small-scale experiment exploring how much character could exist within confined spaces. Over time, it evolved into a complete project shaped heavily by player feedback, be it growing in colour, detail, and flexibility through multiple demo updates and community playtests.

This collaborative process has been central to the game’s identity, with many of its refinements driven by how players chose to build, experiment, and most importantly, express themselves.
