A strategy game that uses cards as a tool, not as a limitation.
According to Lucas Gamarra, the game’s Game Designer, “Heroes of Magic and Steel was never designed to be just a traditional deckbuilder. Our idea was always to create a deep strategy game, where team building is just as important as the cards used during battles.”

Beyond deckbuilding, players must consider positioning, team composition, resource management, and constant adaptations throughout each run. According to the developers, a large part of the strategy begins even before the match starts.

The game will also feature an Adventure Mode, created after feedback from the community. The goal of this mode is to provide a more accessible experience for casual players, while the standard mode preserves the original strategic vision designed by the developers.
From board game to stylized tactical RPGThe original idea behind
Heroes of Magic and Steel was much closer to a traditional board game, using static miniatures instead of animated characters. As development progressed, the team realized the project had the potential to become something much bigger visually.
According to the development team, they decided to completely redesign the project’s presentation and invest in a much more ambitious artistic direction. It was a major change that ended up having a very positive impact on the game’s artwork and visual identity.

Inspired by strategy and deckbuilding classics
Heroes of Magic and Steel was inspired by franchises such as Heroes of Might and Magic, Slay the Spire, and XCOM, combining tactical combat, strategic management, and deckbuilding into a single experience.
According to Lucas, “If we combined elements from these three games into one, the result would probably be very close to what we aimed to create with Heroes.”
The developers also mention that the choice of the deckbuilder genre came both from the team’s passion for the style and from the possibility of creating highly replayable matches filled with different strategies.

Comic-style storytelling and a unique visual identity
Another major highlight of Heroes of Magic and Steel is the way its narrative is presented. The entire lore of the game is told through comics illustrated by hand by the art team.
When asked about it, the team explained that the comic format came from one of the illustrators’ passion for this style of storytelling. Adapting it into the game was a huge challenge, but the entire team embraced the idea, and the final result brought a great deal of personality to the project.
With each completed run, players will unlock a new part of the comics, and by completing all runs, they will gain access to the game’s full lore.
