What is Ao Oni?
The protagonist, a boy named Hiroshi, and his friends step into an abandoned European-style mansion out of curiosity. A terrifying ao oni (blue demon) lurks in the mansion who attacks his friends as Hiroshi explores the mansion. Run from the ao oni while solving the mystery and trying to escape!
"Ao Oni", was first released as a free game in 2004. The game was hugely popular for the strong sense of presence that the ao oni combined with a tense puzzle-solving environment. The game was shared widely on platforms such as Nico Nico and YouTube. Since then, smartphone app versions and remake versions have been released with a total accumulated number of downloads exceeding 34 million. The Steam version released in July 2024 has also greatly increased the global attention, and the Nintendo Switch version released at the same time won first place in the Nintendo eShop download software ranking.
